Russia’s Artur Dalaloyan on top after qualifications at #ECSzczecin2019

12 April 2019
Szczecin’s Netto Arena welcomed over 150 gymnasts trying to qualify for the individual all-around final on Friday and the event finals on the weekend.

2018 truly was the break-out year for Russia’s Artur Dalaloyan, winning three European titles and becoming the first Russian to win the all-around World title in 19 years, and he continued showing great form and difficulty in the qualification round on the opening day of the 2019 Artistic Europeans. Going head-to-head with teammate Nikita Nagornyy, Dalaloyan made the gap in the last rotation on high bar to lead the all-around standing. He also qualified in first place on vault and high bar, and in second place on floor:

Today’s competition went smoothly without any big mistake except from tiny form breaks that can happen anytime. Overall, I am satisfied!

And he’ll be defending his parallel bars title, though Nagornyy claimed the top spot there while also qualifying for pommel horse and rings final.

The top group going into Friday’s all-around final includes a nice mix of nationalities with Turkey’s Ahmet Onder and Ferhat Arican qualifying in third and fifth position respectively, with Cypriot Marios Georgiou in fourth and Joe Faser (GBR) in sixth.

Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat rocked his floor routine for the highest score of the day, a fantastic 15.366 with a difficulty score of 6.4. Teammate Alexander Shatilov made the floor final in seventh place and qualified in tenth place to the all-around final:

I’m very satisfied with my performance. It’s a pleasure to compete in such a great arena. So far so good!

Olympic Champion Max Whitlock (GBR) lived up to his reputation. With 15.033, he posted the top note on pommel horse, almost half a point ahead of his nearest rival Vladislav Poliashov (RUS) and Whitlock’s teammate Brinn Bevan a further three tenths down in third. On rings, Ukraine’s Igor Radivilov claimed the top spot ahead of Armenia’s Vahagn Davtyan and World bronze medallist Marco Lodadio (ITA) before vaulting into that final as well. Except for leader Nagornyy, two other gymnasts scored in the 15 points: Ferhan Arican and Petro Pakhniuk. Double European all-around Champion Oleg Verniaiev, who is coming back from surgery, made the finals on the two events he competed on today: pommel horse and parallel bars. On high bar, the reigning World Champion Epke Zonderland (NED) placed second and 2017 World Champion Tin Srbic (CRO) third.
